Haha.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eNow, let's get on to the introduction.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eThis is a school chart from the 1960s produced by Volk Und Wissen Verlag (commonly known as VWG), the publisher that created almost all of the textbooks, teaching materials, and educational journals in the former East Germany.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eIt is a roll-type wall-hanging teaching tool that was actually used in classrooms.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eTo withstand repeated use, paper is mounted onto a linen backing, and while there is some slight aging, it is in great condition.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eThis specific piece was used as an electronics teaching aid back in the 60s.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eI don't know any German at all, so I asked the dealer, and they told me it was about electronics.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eElectronics is a broad field, but digging a little deeper, it seems to be about a semiconductor called Germanium. Those working in this field or graduates of technical high schools might recognize it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eIn any case, the design is great; I love the black background.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eIt just feels like it really pulls the whole design together, if that makes sense.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eCharacteristic of this era, the images were hand-drawn rather than photographed.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eI’m drawn to the brushwork and color choices, which have a bit of a mid-century feel.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eThe utilitarian, no-nonsense nature of it being a teaching tool gives it a unique charm distinct from fine art.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eWe love them so much we display them at home, too. Since you only need a single hook on the wall to hang one,\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eyou don’t need to do any heavy-duty work like drilling holes or hammering in nails, making the barrier to entry low. It’s also great that you can just roll it up when you want to put it away, so it doesn’t take up space.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eEven though we want to carry framed art, we’re always worried about shipping;\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003ewe haven’t been able to offer any since one arrived completely smashed in the past. (Haha)\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eThis is a wonderful art piece that is the only kind of thing that can travel across countries without any fear of breaking.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eThey are highly regarded in Europe and North America for their design quality, and they typically fetch over 150€ on average.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eDepending on the piece, many are traded for around 300€–500€.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eAs I mentioned, having lived with them as decor for years and photographed them, I can truly say the quality is remarkable. It’s surprising they were produced with this level of quality and design in the 60s.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eThey weren't mass-produced in the modern sense, but were issued by a major publishing house as educational materials, which is perhaps one reason for the high quality.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eIt’s a shame you can’t touch the real thing, but I guarantee you’ll be moved when it arrives at your door.
