An antique lace blouse from 1900s Germany.
This is a new piece from our regular German dealer couple.
It features an abundance of scalloped lace on the placket, collar, and cuffs.
Designed with a hidden button placket, it can be worn open like a jacket (it even comes with a hanger loop), and all the buttons are cotton Dorset buttons.
The gathers at the front also feature cutwork, allowing what’s underneath to peek through (you can see this clearly in the photos where a T-shirt is worn underneath).
The quality and condition are so exceptional that you would never guess it’s roughly 125 years old. Of course, every step of its construction was done by hand.
When people think of antique lace blouses, they usually think of France, but
the appeal of this German blouse is that the cotton fabric is sturdy, making it perfect for actual wear.
Generally, blouses from this era are so old that the fabric has weakened, making them prone to tearing, impossible to wash, and very difficult to handle.
I own many blouses that I used to be able to wear a few years ago but can no longer wear today.
That is why I think this blouse is truly wonderful for its condition and fabric feel, despite being an antique.
Because the lace isn't overly delicate like tulle, you can wash it in a standard washing machine, and the fabric is even tough enough to withstand bleaching if it gets stained. In fact, we have already bleached it once here.
Additionally, the fabric of the body is a rare cotton weave with an intricate pattern woven directly into the cloth. It is not flimsy at all, but rather a shirt fabric with a nice, substantial thickness.
The sleeves and cuffs, as well as the ruffles at the hem, are quite long and wide, so layering it to show off the scallops is incredibly cute! I find this to be another advantage compared to French pieces, which are often more compact.
While there are many modern recreations from the 80s and 90s inspired by antique blouses, they simply cannot compete with the texture and character of the real thing.
As always, I highly recommend this piece, but this one is particularly flawless. Do check it out!
