An antique lace blouse from 1900s Germany.
This is wonderful. Simply too wonderful. It’s the exact same sentiment as the leather coat. Haha.
Now that I think about it, this seems to be the first time TOTO has ever introduced a truly old antique lace blouse.
I personally love it so much, so I'm thrilled! It really feels like I've finally come across it.
I bought it after meeting a wonderful dealer couple in Germany the other day.
The wife was very knowledgeable and taught me a lot, and she said this is from the 1900s. It’s incredible to think it’s roughly 125 years old. And the condition is just amazing.
The cutwork lace adorning the collar and sleeves is, of course, entirely handmade. So many ruffles from the collar. A monogram "B" on the chest. Irresistibly cute.
The ruffles on the front placket conceal the buttons, and it can actually be worn as an open layer, which is a great bonus.
The Dorset buttons are also truly lovely. The skills of the seamstresses back then were extraordinary.
Antique lace blouses are generally associated with France, but
the appeal of this German blouse is that the cotton fabric is sturdy, making it perfect for actually wearing.
Generally, blouses from this era are so old that the fabric has weakened, making them prone to tearing, impossible to wash, and quite difficult to handle.
I own many blouses that I used to be able to wear a few years ago but can no longer wear now.
That’s why I think it’s truly wonderful that this blouse is in this condition and has this texture despite being an antique.
It’s not delicate lace like tulle, so you can wash it in a regular washing machine, and the fabric is even tough enough to be bleached if it gets dirty.
Also, the fabric on the bodice is a rare cotton with a pattern woven directly into it. It’s not thin; it’s a shirt fabric with a nice, substantial weight.
The sleeves, cuffs, and even the ruffles at the hem are a bit long and wide, so it looked incredibly cute layered under a knit to show them off! I think this is another point of appeal compared to French pieces, which are often more compact.
While there are many recent pieces from the 80s and 90s that recreate antique blouses, they still can't compare to the character that a genuine original possesses.
