A travel coat made in Berlin around the late 1950s.
This is a special piece of women’s vintage. I am so excited about it.
It features a signature cocoon silhouette from that era, large rounded collars,
and white stitching that traces the gentle slope of the drop shoulders, with milky white buttons that stand out beautifully against the black fabric.
I paired it with 19th-century under pants.
I deliberated quite a bit on the material, but it is likely a high-density cotton-nylon poplin. I concluded this based on its slight dampness and cool touch, as well as the degree of tension and weave! I considered pure cotton, but it definitely has a hint of synthetic fiber.
Water droplets beaded up on the surface, so I imagine it served perfectly as a travel coat back then by repelling light rain.
This fabric feel—this kind of vintage sporty textile—is not something found in modern clothing, and it’s the kind of material that enthusiasts will absolutely love.
Above all, it has these details that are so quintessentially cute for 1950s womenswear, yet
this minimalism? This sense of mode? It’s irresistible. There are just so many parts of it that I can't get enough of.
Seeing the word "Berlin" on the tag—man, they really nailed it!
This is sure to strike a chord with geeky women who love vintage, love modern fashion, and simply love clothing.
It is unequivocally special. It is incredibly cool. I want to wear it myself! Haha.
Since it is a size 50 German women’s garment from that era, the fit is quite generous. I’d say about an XL.
I was able to wear knitwear underneath with no problem. It has enough weight to serve as a light coat for autumn and spring, or as an outer layer in winter depending on what you wear beneath it.
