1950s Czechoslovak People's Army "Dubáky" camouflage jacket

Long time no see.

This camo sold out at our pop-up in Japan in April, so we’re restocking it.

This is likely the last one for now.

We’ve sourced four of these 50s-60s Czechoslovak People's Army camo pieces in the past, and every single one has had a different silhouette. It seems they were custom-made in various ways back then.

This is the first time we’ve seen this smock pattern with three pockets on the front and two on the back.

It’s incredibly cool. Just incredible.

I don’t know what it is—it’s cute, it’s cool, it’s fashionable. That shock I felt when I first discovered it—the "Wait, this is camouflage?!" factor—never fades. It moves me every time I look at it.

I especially love the light blue tones around the front pockets.

I’ve seen many of these over the years, but it’s fascinating how the color tones differ on every single one.

Československá lidová armáda trousers

To briefly explain this camouflage, it’s the camo pattern used by the military of the former Czechoslovak Socialist Republic from the mid-50s until 1990.

Locally, it is officially known as the Czechoslovak People's Army, and the camouflage is called "DUBÁKY." A friend of mine who deals in military goods told me that this means "mushrooms" in Czech, and that it's called that because it actually looks a bit like them.

By the way, there are several patterns of this People's Army camo, and this is the earliest one.

You might wonder what a "People's Army" actually is; simply put, it seems that’s what armies belonging to socialist states or communist parties were called.

Though it is the Czech Republic today, the history prior to the 1989 Velvet Revolution is incredibly complex and heavy. It’s quite a long story, so if you're curious, I highly encourage you to look it up.

The communist regime ended with that 1989 revolution, and in 1993, the country split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

This is a truly significant part of history for the Czech people today. The stories I sometimes hear from older people I meet at bars—about the era, their work, politics, war, immigration, and so much more—are almost always breathtaking and intense.

So, this is a truly historical piece.

Between its unique look, its rarity, and everything else, it’s outstanding, but what I’m most happy about is that it actually looks cool when you put it on.

Honestly, this isn’t an item you can just source out in the wild. After living in Europe for about five years, we’ve made various connections and gotten to know people who used to be in the military, which is how we arrived at items like this.

I am truly grateful for every connection.

It’s a bit of a steep price, but this is a magnificent garment that can’t be judged by numbers alone.

I don't like using the word "magnificent" too often, but this really is.
