1960s VWV school astronomy chart

We managed to get a bulk quantity last month, and this series arrived all at once.

The response was huge, thank you so much!!

I had the chance to meet with a dealer I know recently and asked them about it, so they collected some more for us. As of now, this is the last of them.

I’m not sure when we'll be able to get more, but it’s something we personally love—we even display them in our own homes and at the showroom—so we’ll keep searching hard. Haha.

Now, let’s move on to the introduction.

This is a 1960s school chart from Volk Und Wissen Verlag, commonly known as VWV, a publisher in the former East Germany that produced almost all textbooks, teaching materials, and educational journals.

It’s a roll-up style wall chart that was actually used in educational settings.

To withstand repeated use, the paper is mounted on a linen backing,

and despite some signs of age, it is in good condition.

This particular piece was used as an astronomy teaching aid back in the 60s.

I don’t know German at all, so I just guessed based on the design, but when I asked the dealer, they confirmed it was for astronomy.

Regardless, the design is just great—simply stylish. Haha.

I absolutely love this generous use of negative space.

It features hand-drawn illustrations rather than photos, which is typical of this era.

I’m drawn to the brushwork and color choices, which give off a somewhat mid-century vibe.

Because they were educational tools, they have an inorganic quality and a lack of excess that gives them a unique appeal distinct from fine art.

We love them ourselves and have them hanging in our homes. Since they can be hung from just a single hook on the wall,

they don’t require any heavy-duty work like drilling holes or hammering in nails, making them very accessible. Plus,

they’re easy to store since you can just roll them up and they take up no space.

As for traditional framed art, even if I want to carry it, I’m always worried about shipping it,

and I haven’t been able to offer any since one arrived smashed to pieces in the past. (Haha)

This is a rare piece of art that can endure long-distance international travel without any fear of breaking.

They are highly regarded in Europe and North America for their excellent design, typically selling for over €150.

In many cases, depending on the piece, they can trade for anywhere from €300 to €500.

As I mentioned, after living with these in our interiors for years, photographing them, and feeling the texture of the paper firsthand, I am genuinely amazed by the quality. It’s surprising that something of this quality and design was produced in the 60s.

I think one reason for the high quality is that they weren't mass-produced in the modern sense, but were issued by a major company as official educational material.

It’s a shame you can’t touch the real thing, but I guarantee you’ll be moved when it arrives. Haha.

It looks much cooler and has more presence in person. A very "manly" presence, if you will. Haha.

There are so many different types in the world that there are even collectors for them, and for vintage lovers, the fact that it's hard to find the same one twice is part of the thrill.
