1960s VWV school chart of Air Brake II

A publisher that produced almost all textbooks, teaching materials, and educational journals in the former East Germany.

This is a 1960s school chart from Volk und Wissen Verlag, commonly known as VWV.

It is a so-called roll-style wall-hanging teaching aid that was actually used in educational settings.

To withstand repeated use, paper is mounted on a linen backing, and although there is some age-related wear, it is in good condition.

I was able to purchase these in bulk from a dealer I know this time.

This seems to be a teaching aid about air brakes used for vehicles and railways. And it's part II, at that.

At first, I thought it was a fishing reel or something (laughs). I really love the light blue hue.

It features hand-drawn illustrations rather than photographs, unique to this era.

I am drawn to the touch and color choices, which give it a somewhat mid-century feel.

The sense of detachment and minimalism inherent to educational materials provide a unique charm different from fine art.

We love them ourselves and have one displayed in our home. Since it can be hung with just a single hook on the wall,

it’s low-barrier as it doesn't require hard labor like using an impact drill to make holes or hammering in nails, and it's also great that it just rolls up for easy storage without taking up space.

Even though I'd like to handle regular framed art, I'm always anxious about transport,

and I haven't been able to offer it since one arrived completely shattered in the past. (laughs)

This is a wonderful art piece that is one of the few that won't break even during major moves across countries.

They are highly regarded in Europe and North America for their design, with prices averaging over 150€.

There are many different types around the world, and they even have collectors; the fact that you rarely come across the same one is a point that I think tickles the fancy of vintage lovers.
