1960s VWV school astronomy chart

We were able to acquire a large quantity of this series last month and stocked it all at once.

It was a huge hit, thank you very much!!

I had the chance to meet with a dealer acquaintance of mine recently and told them about it, so they collected some more for us. As of now, this is the last of them.

I don’t know when the next time will be, but since these are things we personally love and display in our own homes and showroom, we will keep working hard to track more down. haha

Now, let's move on to the introduction.

This is a 1960s school chart from Volk Und Wissen Verlag, commonly known as VWV, the publisher that produced almost all the textbooks, teaching materials, and educational journals in the former East Germany.

It is a so-called roll-style wall-hanging teaching aid, which was actually used in the classroom.

To withstand repeated use, paper is affixed to a linen backing,

and despite some age-related wear, it is in good condition.

This was used as an astronomy teaching aid back in the 60s.

I don't know any German, so I kind of guessed that was the case from the design, but when I asked the dealer, they confirmed it was astronomy.

We have other astronomy charts in stock today, but strictly speaking, this seems to be from the field of astronomy that studies the properties of stars (such as temperature, chemical composition, and evolutionary stage) based on the analysis of stellar light and its spectrum (distribution of light by wavelength). Just thinking about it gives me a headache. haha

Anyway, the design is great; it's simply cool.

The color scheme against the black background is irresistible.

The catchy look is also a plus.

Hand-drawn by people, not photographs, which is unique to this era.

I am drawn to the touch and color selection, which gives it a somewhat mid-century atmosphere.

The inorganic, no-frills quality that comes from being a teaching material is a unique charm different from pure art.

We love them too and have them displayed at home. Since it can be hung with just a single hook on the wall,

you don't need heavy-duty work like drilling holes or hammering in nails, which lowers the barrier to entry, and when you want to put it away, you just roll it up, so it doesn't take up space.

I’d like to carry standard framed art, but I'm always worried about shipping it.

After one piece arrived smashed to pieces in the past, I haven't been able to offer them. (haha)

This is a wonderful art piece that is the only one you don't have to worry about breaking during a long journey across borders.

They are valued for their high design quality in Europe and North America as well, often fetching over 150€ on average.

Depending on the piece, many are traded for around 300€-500€.

As I mentioned above, we have used them as interior decor for years, photographed them like this, and felt the quality of the paper firsthand, and the quality is truly high. It's surprising that such quality and design were produced in the 60s.

I think one of the reasons for the high quality is that they weren't mass-produced in a generic sense, but were issued by a large educational publishing company.

It's a shame you can't touch the real thing, but I guarantee you'll be moved when it arrives. haha

It's far cooler and has more presence than you see in photos. It has a real "masculine" presence. "Masculine." haha

There are many different types around the world, and they even have collectors, so the fact that it's hard to come across the same one again is something that tickles the heart of a vintage lover.

condition - No issues. Although there is some wear due to age and use in an educational setting, it is in very good condition.
