You hook the U-shaped piece below onto the clasp, and then tighten it by turning the round ball, which acts as a screw.

Once it’s tightened properly, this clasp will not come off.
Since we usually think of screws as tools, it was quite refreshing at first to see them used in accessories.
It's not something you see often on vintage items, so I feel it was a feature reserved for pieces with particularly elaborate construction.
Regardless, it’s a vintage piece that looks fresh to us born in this modern era.
