Killer pants.
Against all odds, I managed to stock a large quantity of deadstock.
You rarely come across things like this. Haha.
The pair worn in the photos is my own personal pair; I used it for the shoot because I wanted to deliver these with the Stone tags still attached.
These are truly a killer pair of pants, so please take a good look at the photos.
Stone Island was born in 1982, and their entire first collection was crafted using this fabric called "Tela Stella." These pants are made from that very fabric.
I often see jackets, but this is the first time I've come across the pants.
I don't know the exact collection, but I believe it's from '82 or the immediate follow-up.
Since these are expensive, I'll explain the fabric properly below, but I want to start with my own impressions. Actually, I own five pairs of these "Tela Stella" pants, and I kept one from this current batch as a test piece for myself. I did this because my other pairs are from Boneville, not Stone Island—though they were designed by the same person, Massimo Osti—and I wasn't sure if the difference in brand meant a difference in the material. It seems the cotton blend ratio of the Tela Stella fabric is slightly different; these Stone Island pants feel just a tiny bit thicker than the Boneville ones I own. Just a tiny bit.
They are incredibly comfortable to wear; they're light, high-density, and have a crisp, papery texture. They also dry unbelievably fast after a wash. Haha.
Also, as you wear them in, they fade beautifully, truly.
They develop a kind of cracking fade in high-stress areas. I hope this conveys it, but it’s a fabric that you can really enjoy aging—the more you wear and wash it, the cooler it gets. Bravo.
These are deadstock and have a long inseam, but I usually wear mine cuffed. They are double-dyed, so the color on the inside is also quite lovely—please take a look at the photos.

As it turns out, this "Tela Stella" fabric was originally found by Massimo at a company when he was looking for new materials for his brand in the 70s. It was a 100% cotton canvas used for tarps/awnings, double-dyed. Apparently, it was returned to the company because the color faded after washing, but Massimo thought it was "beautiful." He didn't see the fading and aging as a flaw, but rather the opposite.
He was captivated by that aesthetic, perceiving the wrinkles and fading as value and charm. He decided to recreate it after seeing the returned jackets, taking it to another company and repeating various processing tests to reproduce that same texture.
Anyway, he apparently tested it over and over until he was satisfied. Haha.
The fabric used then was a canvas that was a different color on each side—red on one side and green on the other—and had gone through a very intense washing process.
And that is the fabric used in the pants we have in stock now.
There are various color variations of garments made with this Tela Stella fabric.
Personally, I really love this colorway: green and navy. It's stylish.
Anyway, this is the fabric that represents Stone Island. It's truly incredible. It’s a fabric exclusive to Stone Island—or rather, Massimo—so I think it’s truly one-of-a-kind.
Also, at the time, these Tela Stella items were so popular at the first exhibition that they were pulled from the market, and demand continued to outpace production for a while after that. Haha.
We wear them ourselves, and they are amazing. They put you in a good mood, and they look great just thrown on.
Whether you’re already familiar with them or not, I highly recommend them—especially to those who haven't bought Stone Island yet, as this is an iconic piece!!
