Killer pants.
I managed to stock a large quantity of these, unexpectedly, as deadstock.
It’s rare to come across something like this. Haha
The pair worn in the photos is my own personal pair; I used it for the shoot because I want to ship these out with the Stone tag still attached.
They are honestly such a cool pair, so please take a good look at the photos.
Stone Island was born in 1982, and their entire first collection was crafted using this fabric called "Tela Stella." These are pants made from that very fabric.
I see jackets around sometimes, but this is my first time encountering the pants.
I'm not sure of the specific collection, but I believe it's from 1982 or the collection immediately following.
Since these are a pricey pair, I’ll provide a proper explanation of the fabric below, but I want to start with my own impressions. Actually, I own five pairs of these "Tela Stella" pants personally, and I’ve taken one of this current batch for myself as an experiment. The reason is that my other personal pairs are from Boneville, not Stone Island—though they were designed by the same person, Massimo—and I’m not sure if it’s because the brand is different, but the cotton blend ratio in this Tela Stella fabric seems slightly different. These Stone Island pants I have in stock now feel just a tiny bit thicker than the Boneville ones I own. Just a tiny bit.
They are incredibly comfortable to wear; they’re lightweight, dense, and have a crisp, paper-like texture. They also dry incredibly fast after washing. Haha
And as you break them in, they fade in such a cool way, really.
They develop a kind of cracking fade in high-stress areas. I hope this conveys it, but it’s a fabric that truly lets you enjoy the aging process; it just gets more sophisticated the more you wear and wash it. Bravo.
This batch is deadstock and the inseam is long, but I always wear mine cuffed. Since it’s a double-dyed fabric, the color on the reverse side is also really lovely—please check the photos.
Below, I’ll summarize the information detailed in the books.
Actually, this "Tela Stella" fabric was something Massimo reportedly found at a certain company as a new material for a brand he was working with in the 70s. It was a 100% cotton canvas used for awnings, and apparently, it was double-dyed. It was returned to the company because the color faded after washing, but at that moment, Massimo thought it was "beautiful." He didn’t view the fading or the aging as a flaw; in fact, he saw it as the opposite.
He was seemingly fascinated by that kind of texture, finding value and charm in the creases and fading. He decided to recreate it after seeing the returned jackets, taking it to another company and repeating various processing tests to reproduce that same texture.
Regardless, it sounds like they tested it over and over until they were satisfied. Haha
And what was used back then was a canvas fabric with different colors on each side—one side red, the other green—that had undergone a very intense, hard-wash process.
Well, the fabric of these pants I have in stock is exactly that.
There are various color variations of clothing made with this Tela Stella fabric.
Personally, I really love this colorway—green and navy. It’s stylish.
Regardless, it is the fabric that represents Stone Island. It’s genuinely cool, and since it’s a fabric unique to Massimo—not just Stone—I think this is the definition of one-of-a-kind.
Also, back then, items made with Tela Stella sold so well at the first exhibition that they were temporarily pulled from sale, and production reportedly couldn't keep up with demand after that. Haha
In reality, we wear these ourselves, and they are amazing. They get you excited, and they look cool whether you just throw them on casually.
Whether you already know about them or not, I highly recommend them—I strongly recommend them especially to those who haven't bought Stone Island yet, because these are iconic!!
