Killer pants.
Against all odds, I managed to source a large quantity of these as deadstock.
You just don't see things like this often. Haha.
The pair worn in the photos is the same model, but I used my personal pair for the shoot because I wanted to deliver yours with the Stone tag still attached.
They really are such a cool pair of pants, so please take a good look at the photos a few times.
Stone Island was born in '82, and their very first collection was made entirely using this fabric called "Tela Stella." These pants are made from that fabric.
I see jackets pop up occasionally, but this is the first time I've ever come across the pants.
I'm not sure about the specific collection, but I believe it's from '82 or a collection immediately following it.
Since these are an expensive piece, I'll explain the fabric properly below, but first, I want to share my own impressions. I actually own five pairs of these "Tela Stella" pants personally, and I decided to keep one from this shipment to test out. The reason being, my other personal pairs aren't Stone Island; they're Boneville. While they were still designed by Massimo, I'm not sure if it's because of the brand difference, but the cotton blend ratio in this "Tela Stella" fabric feels slightly thicker in the Stone Island pair we just received compared to my Boneville ones. Just a tiny bit.
They are incredibly comfortable to wear; they're light and have a crisp, high-density feel. They also dry unbelievably fast after washing. Haha.
And as you break them in, they fade beautifully, I'm serious.
They develop a kind of cracking fade in the high-stress areas. I hope I’m conveying this well, but it’s truly a fabric that lets you enjoy the aging process—the more you wear and wash them, the more character they develop. Bravo.
These are deadstock, so the inseam is long, but I always fold them up when I wear mine. Since it's a double-dyed fabric, the color on the inside is also really lovely—please check the photos.
Below, I'll briefly summarize the information documented in books.
Actually, the "Tela Stella" fabric was something Massimo first discovered at a company while working on a new material for a brand he was involved with in the 70s. It was a 100% cotton canvas originally intended for sunshades, and it was double-dyed. It had been returned to the company because it faded after washing, but at that moment, Massimo found it "beautiful." He didn't see the fading or aging as a defect—quite the opposite, in fact.
He was seemingly captivated by that kind of texture, viewing the wrinkling and fading as a value and a charm. After seeing the returned jacket, he decided to recreate it, took it to a different company, and went through various processing tests to replicate that exact feel.
In any case, he apparently put it through countless tests until he was satisfied. Haha.
The material used back then was a canvas fabric with different colors on each side—one side red, the other green—that had been treated with a very heavy, intense wash.
That is the exact fabric of the pants we have in stock now.
There are various color variations for garments made with this "Tela Stella" fabric.
Personally, I really love this colorway: green and navy. It's so stylish.
At any rate, it's the signature fabric for Stone Island, and it's truly amazing. It's a fabric unique to Stone—or rather, to Massimo—so I think it's fair to call it one of a kind.
And back then, at the very first exhibition, these "Tela Stella" items sold so well that they were pulled from the market because production couldn't keep up with the demand. Haha.
We wear them ourselves, and they're genuinely great. They get me excited, and they look cool no matter how you throw them on.
Whether you already know about them or not, I highly recommend them—I especially want to recommend them to anyone who hasn't bought Stone Island before, because these are truly iconic!!
