1980s USAF F-1B flight trousers / rare ladies' size

US AIR FORCE F-1B flight pants

These are overpants worn by the US Air Force, produced in 1980.

They appear to have been designed to be worn under the N-3B jacket,

and I have managed to find an incredibly rare "golden size" for women,

fitting approximately a 27-29 waist and 32-33 length.

The color is a deep, cool sage green.

Because they were originally overpants designed for aircrews in extreme cold, they are padded and warm enough to wear on their own without tights, even in the dead of winter.

Despite being overpants, they are fully functional with pockets on the knees and hips.

They feature a luxurious design with padding throughout and double-layered fabric for reinforcement at the knees and hips,

yet they don't look awkwardly bulky and have a commanding, stylish presence.

You can only find such rugged, striking clothing in military gear.

I’ve really been drawn lately to the luxurious details of government-issued clothing,

where resources were poured into creating the ultimate in functionality and durability.

When you do find rare military pieces in a good size for women,

they possess a resilient beauty that you won't find in any off-the-shelf fashion.

Even though they weren't designed with fashion in mind at the time,

that aesthetic feels just right to me now. Perhaps it’s because I’m getting older,

but I think military gear is a fantastic category, both as vintage clothing and as pieces to wear myself.

2021 was a year spent falling in love with the occasional military find like this one.

This pair is the pinnacle among them.

I believe it is truly rare to find flight pants that fit in this size.

As they are overpants, the waist pockets are pass-through pockets.

Equipped with four deep pockets at the knees and hips.
