A 1940s French nurse's dress.
It’s in beautiful condition. I believe it is likely deadstock.
The design is lovely, it’s white, and it’s long-sleeved.
It doesn't have an awkward cinched waist;
it has a straight, A-line silhouette that flares out. It’s truly charming.
The material is that high-quality cotton unique to French vintage;
light, thin, and with a slightly napped texture.
Since it doesn't contain linen, it’s actually easier to wear every day, which is wonderful.
The fabric is so pristine that it doesn't look that old at first glance, but I hope the photos convey its true quality.
And then there are these cool, milk glass buttons.
They are made of a rare glass material that was frequently produced in the early 20th century.
The fact that the front buttons are offset to the left is likely a design choice
intended to keep them out of the way for medical work, but
it feels very fresh today. I would honestly love to see a shirt or a light blouson sampled directly from this.
On the open space of the right side, there’s an undersized chest pocket and some handy waist pockets.
It’s such a joy to come across vintage workwear that just happens to have a fantastic design when viewed through a modern lens. haha
It has been bleached once to make it stark white and to clean away any invisible stains.
It certainly looks cool buttoned all the way up,
but it would also look great worn with the top or hem unbuttoned, or thrown on loosely like an atelier coat.
I highly recommend it.
