An elegant French vintage dress.
From La Samaritaine, the historic Paris department store founded in 1870.
This is a dress, or coat, made of lightweight black (gray) chambray from around the 1950s-60s.
Unlike the sturdy fabric of "kuro-shan" (black chambray) shop coats, this piece features a thin, light texture similar to a shirt.
With its small, slender collar, white piping along the shoulders and placket, the gathers running alongside them, and the three-dimensional sleeves, I could go on and on about the details I love.
The texture of the chambray fabric and the play of light and shadow created by these details look truly beautiful.
It is a dress with a lovely, feminine silhouette and a subtle waist, but when worn open like a coat, it takes on a rugged, atelier-coat aesthetic.
Old French clothing is truly wonderful.
It seems to have been well-loved by its previous owner; there is reinforcement fabric behind the buttons, and the stitching, which looks like sashiko, is vintage and charming.
There are some minor flaws, but due to the nature of the fabric, they are not noticeable, and the price has been adjusted accordingly.
I fell in love with it at first sight in Paris this past June and have been saving it until now.
