It's been a long time since I've had a French atelier coat.
They are sometimes referred to as "black chambray."
I took some new photos and tried it on, and it’s still timelessly cool—a true classic.
Surprisingly, this is my first time getting one in this huge size. It’s simply cool.
Because it's so large, the abundance of fabric creates a swaying silhouette that is just incredible.
As the name suggests, they are famous for being worn as overcoats by artists and art students while painting, but they were widely used in France as work coats by farmers and horse dealers (apparently, it’s hard for hair and grass to stick to them), and even came in children's sizes.
Because of how they were used, some have paint splatters, while others have numerous repairs from being mended repeatedly—the unique character of each individual piece is part of the charm of an atelier coat.
I personally have loved wearing atelier coats for a long time, and I really think the fabric on all of them is just wonderful.
It's sturdy yet thin, making it perfect as a light outer layer.
It has that specific shirt-jacket weight unique to French black chambray that can't be described with any other material.
These are small details, but the sleeves are on the shorter and wider side with that three-dimensional, tubular shape unique to French vintage, and the pockets are positioned near the hip bones, creating a full, wide silhouette when you put your hands in them—everything about it is just the best. This particular piece is in great condition and is a large size, so I highly recommend it.
It has been washed once.
