70s–80s abstract wall rug

Handmade rug from the 70s-80s.

I love the orange, which looks like a round sunset.

The art style and color palette are quintessentially 70s,

but since it's made of acrylic kit material, it's possible it dates into the 80s, so I've labeled it as 70s-80s.

It's intended as wall art, but I love latch hook rugs because their 3D texture makes them so much more unique than a simple painting.

The pieces I've collected this time were made using a technique called latch hooking, popular from the 70s to the 80s.

Originally, kits for knitting high-quality household rugs at home had been circulating since the early 19th century,

and from the 30s to the 60s, they evolved both as a way to save money on expensive rugs and as a popular hobby.

Eventually, as other forms of entertainment increased and carpets became cheaply available through mass production in China and retailers like IKEA, they became less common,

but items from the mid-century period (60s-70s) are characterized by psychedelic and futuristic funk art.

By the 80s, the trend shifted from floor rugs to wall hangings featuring pictures of animals and characters.

This particular piece depicts a sunset and a large tree, often seen in items from the 60s-70s,

and I love how it has an abstract quality that works whether you place it sideways or upside down.

It can be used on the floor, or if hanging on the wall, you can drive a nail through the finished edge on the back. Since it's made of lightweight acrylic, a thin nail or a thumbtack is strong enough to support it.
