I will say this upfront: you will never encounter another one like it.
A super unique setup that brilliantly fuses 1970s hippie moods with traditional Central and Eastern European folklore costumes and everyday workwear.
It’s insane. Truly breathtaking.
Handmade blouses that elevate folklore costumes are rare, though we do occasionally come across them,
European unknown cotton gathered blouse or Vintage cotton shirt
as we have introduced in the past, but this piece is truly on another level. It exists in a completely different sphere.
The sheer volume of fabric—surpassing the aforementioned pieces—and the super bell sleeves created by the gathers are incredible.
The bottoms are completely wild, with an even more staggering amount of fabric and gathering. Haha.
It looks like a skirt at first glance, but the fact that it is actually pants is just exhilarating.
The buttons on the blouse are also traditionally set for men, so I wonder if it was originally made for a man?
The size is, of course, unisex, and it looks just as cool when worn by a man.
Having seen so many jaw-dropping vintage pieces and brand archives, I don't think my heart has ever raced quite like this before.
It is such a peerless, one-of-a-kind art piece that, to be honest, I don't want to let it go. Haha.
As it is handmade, details are unknown; however, based on our experience living in Central Europe, the culture we’ve learned, the clothes we’ve seen, and the research we’ve done, I can infer the following:
It was likely created during the 1970s ethnic and hippie movements, a time when the reinterpretation of traditional folk costumes was a popular trend.
While incorporating details found in famous Romanian and Hungarian costumes,
the choice of material is cotton—fitting for modern life rather than linen or wool—
and it adds an aesthetic of bell sleeves, wide silhouettes, and fringe in line with 70s style.
Furthermore, the blouse incorporates elements of daily work shirts, making this a special, one-of-a-kind item that fuses various cultures and eras in a way that could only have been created by the sensibilities of that time.
The striking indigo blue is also deeply connected to this region;
in fact, Central and Eastern Europe has a tradition of indigo dyeing, just like in Japan.
In Czechoslovakia, where we live, there is a history of women wearing simple, monochromatic work clothes—often made of indigo-dyed fabric—with loose sleeves, bodices, pleats, and gathers.
From this, I infer that this is a 70s folklore revival piece packed with the unique sensibilities of Central and Eastern Europe.
I wanted you to know this unique background, so this turned into a long story. I actually encountered this piece when I had only been in the Czech Republic for about a year,
and I’ve kept it stored away because I just couldn't bring myself to part with it easily.
As we were unpacking our collection for the shop opening at the end of the year, I rediscovered it,
and decided it was fitting for our first arrival of the new year. Even though I really don't want to let it go, haha.
