70s Uzbekistan suzani robe

A robe I acquired from a lovely lady during my buying trip to Paris at the start of this month.

Today, two of them have arrived in a different pattern.

They are made from Suzani, a handmade embroidered fabric from Uzbekistan.

They are just so cute.

I occasionally come across this "Suzani" fabric in Europe, but it's often too expensive to buy. It's a beloved textile—I've seen it used as store displays, and a dealer I like even hangs it in his home—so this is actually the first time I've come across it made into clothing.

When I asked that lovely lady about the Suzani, she explained that it comes from a culture where women hand-weave it to take with them when they get married. It's a wonderful tradition.

And I suppose, for some reason or another, it was turned into clothing.

This particular Suzani has a black background, which makes it look incredibly cool. While it’s certainly still colorful, I prefer the black base. Given how it’s usually used, I feel like they tend to be a bit more flamboyant.

As for why there is so much of it in Europe, she explained that one reason is that the Soviet Union (Russia) was once in Uzbekistan, leading to many Russians migrating there, and also that many Europeans visited as travelers, which caused a lot of it to flow into the region.

That’s not the only reason, but from my own research, it seems it was originally a traditional item that gradually changed for commercial purposes.

I’m so grateful for such wonderful knowledge, as I’ve always been drawn to this fabric. Haha.

The material is cotton—it’s so fine and high-quality that I wonder if it’s silk-blended? (Apparently, there are even pieces made of actual silk fabric.)

The size is roughly a men's Large.

Unless you have a particularly large build, both men and women can wear it as intended.

The lining is well-made with cotton fabric, and the pattern is beautiful.

The quality is high; what a luxurious piece to throw on! Haha.

It’s unlikely I’ll find another one like this, and quite simply, it’s incredibly cute.

Highly recommended!! It’s perfect for the coming season as well.

The lady I bought it from mentioned that since the embroidery thread might bleed when washed, it’s better to only clean the soiled areas.

After touching and examining it myself, I agree that there is definitely a risk of that, so dry cleaning is the safest bet.
