70s Uzbekistan suzani robe

A robe I purchased from a wonderful lady during my buying trip to Paris at the beginning of this month.

I have two of them in stock today, each with a different pattern.

They are made from handmade embroidered fabric from Uzbekistan called Suzani.

They are just so lovely.

I occasionally see this fabric, known as Suzani, in Europe, but it's often too expensive for me to buy. It's a beloved fabric—used as shop displays or hung up in the homes of my favorite dealers—so I was surprised to see it fashioned into clothing for the first time.

I asked that lady more about these Suzanis, and she explained that it is a culture where women hand-weave them when they get married to take to their new homes. It's a beautiful tradition.

I imagine they were made into garments for some reason or another.

This particular Suzani has a black background, which I think is just incredibly cool. It's still colorful, but I personally prefer the black base. I feel like these are often more vibrant in color, given their typical use.

As for why there are so many in Europe, she explained that it's partly because of the former Soviet presence in Uzbekistan, the migration of many Russians, and the fact that many Europeans visited the region as tourists, leading to them flowing into the area.

That’s not the only reason, but in my own research, it seems they were originally traditional items that gradually shifted toward commercial production.

I am so grateful for this wonderful knowledge; I’ve been drawn to this fabric for a long time. Haha.

The material is cotton, though it's so fine and high-quality that I wonder if it has some silk blended in. (Apparently, there are versions where the fabric itself is actually silk.)

The size is roughly a men's L.

Unless you have a particularly large build, both men and women can wear it as intended.

It is fully lined with cotton fabric, and the pattern is beautiful.

The quality is high—what a luxurious piece to throw on! Haha.

It’s unlikely I’ll come across these again, and quite simply, they are incredibly cute.

I highly recommend them!! They are also perfect for the coming season.

The lady I bought them from mentioned that when washing, the embroidery thread might bleed, so it’s better to just spot-clean the dirty areas.

After handling them and looking them over, I agree that there is a risk of that, so dry cleaning is definitely the safest option.
