This vintage women's piece was a shocking find when I first saw it.
It is presumably a work jacket for women from East Germany.
The tag is simple, the kind often seen on workwear, but
the design is incredibly fashionable. Where do I even start? Haha.
First, the large, quintessentially 70s collar that catches your eye, and
it's a zip-up jacket with tons of pockets.
It also has an elasticized waist for a shaped silhouette,
and elasticized cuffs that create a ruffled look. So cute!
The pleats running down the back are cool, it looks great with the large collar popped up,
and the top and bottom pocket design on the front goes without saying.
The fabric, this unbleached cotton canvas, is truly rare and interesting.
To begin with, you rarely see this kind of fabric used in general East German clothing, including workwear. I’ve only ever seen it once on a chore jacket.
In terms of design and silhouette alone, it’s a super stylish piece, almost like 80s Mugler.
Yet, it’s from socialist-era East Germany. And its intended use was probably as a work garment.
I was moved to realize there are still clothes out there I know nothing about.
It reminded me of the feeling I had when I first started living in Europe, when every day was filled with things like, "What is this? I've never seen this before!"
It’s truly rare to find vintage pieces that are incredibly cool while also feeling like one-of-a-kind items you won't see anyone else wearing.
I’m sincerely recommending this—I’d almost want to keep it in my own collection.
