90s LEFT HAND Thermojoint Jacket by Massimo Osti

This is the first time we've had this in stock at TOTO. It’s a piece of clothing I’ve never had the chance to acquire before. Actually, I was recently on a whirlwind two-night trip to Naples to eat my way through the city, and having a bit of extra time, I was able to get it from a dealer—or should I say a friend? Someone I have that kind of relationship with.

I was truly happy. Haha. And it’s even unused.

This unpretentious yet extraordinary aura—it’s the most exciting thing I’ve found in a while. I also love that so few people around me are wearing it.

The double-breasted design, the way the pockets are placed, the stitching, the logo heat-pressed onto the left sleeve that you only notice if you look closely, and this cool lining. Those in the know will immediately recognize it as a Massimo creation. It’s irresistible!!

It goes without saying that this is the personal brand of Massimo Osti, the designer behind C.P. Company and Stone Island.

For those who own Massimo’s book, I’m sure you’ll understand everything I’m about to say, but I’ll present it here incorporating stories I heard directly from him, an Italian.

The brand only existed from 1993 to 1999, and it was the first one Massimo started outside of the C.P. and Stone Island company. It seems it was launched in partnership with a company called Allegri.

The signature "Thermo-Joint" fabric of LEFT HAND is made by bonding a lightweight cotton to PVC at high temperatures.

It’s almost impossible to explain. Haha.

So, I’ll do my best to convey what it feels like to touch and wear. Haha.

The first thing I thought was what a mysterious color it is—technically, is it brown? But due to the nature of the fabric, it looks like a subtly different color depending on how the light hits it. Regardless, it’s just cool.

As for the feel, it’s firm but moist, almost like a high-density nylon material. It’s easy to wear, and the unique silhouette created by this fabric is just incredible.

I’ve taken plenty of photos, so please take a good look through them. We’ve also shot with a female model; check out the shots where it’s just draped over, not even worn properly—it’s understated but so stylish.

And this fabric is 100% completely waterproof and is said to be able to protect you from up to 80% of nuclear radiation.

As to why he developed a fabric based on such an idea—it’s written in the book—from the early 90s, Massimo was conscious of how to protect oneself from the difficult situations of urban life, such as pollution, traffic, and the dangers of radiation.

And why did he think that way? It’s said he was influenced by many close friends who were illustrators depicting near-future, nightmarish worlds.

Now I get it. Amazing. Haha.

I almost forgot to mention—about this PVC fabric, he apparently took it from a PVC shower curtain he saw at a hotel and used it as a sample. His perspective is truly interesting!!

This got a bit long, but it’s a piece I genuinely recommend from the bottom of my heart.

This is a piece you should buy without hesitation. If it doesn't sell, I’m keeping it for myself!! I want to wear it constantly!!
