This unique piece of jewelry was acquired from the estate auction of the wardrobe of Frances Patiky Stein, the legendary fashion editor and icon who passed away in 2021.
Stein served as an editor at US VOGUE and played a pivotal role in the reconstruction of CHANEL's jewelry and accessory department in the 80s and 90s. As it is from her estate, this piece was not only worn by her, but may have also served as a reference or design source.
While the exact provenance of this African silver jewelry is unknown, its inorganic, straightforward design carries incredible power. The texture is raw, with distortions and scratches left as they are, giving it a visceral feel. The silver has a matte, muted luster, with only a single hand-engraved line running down the center.
The sheer surface area of the silver is instantly eye-catching. When worn, I had the strange sensation that it became more than just a decoration—it became a part of my own body. The surreal feeling of having a large mass of silver within my own skin, as if I were expanding, is incredibly exhilarating. Haha.
Despite its size, it doesn't overwhelm other pieces while still maintaining an overwhelming presence. Whether worn boldly over a knit sweater or peeking out from under a shirt, it shines even in ordinary situations and is an item that elevates you. I actually want to enjoy it exactly like that. That’s why I deliberately wore it with some casual, everyday clothes.
Stein was someone who didn't distinguish between the ordinary and the extraordinary when it came to jewelry, enjoying wearing it every single day. Whether she was impeccably made up in a beautiful suit,
or dressed in a casual, worn-out knit and trousers, in every photo, you can see brilliant jewelry shining on her wrists, ears, or neck. It is particularly striking how she would mix silver and gold, often wearing a great deal of it at once.
The way she enjoyed jewelry resonates with our own philosophy, and combined with anecdotes of her being stubborn and prone to clashes, Stein is a figure I am deeply drawn to.
Of all the items in the estate auction, our jeweler chose to focus on this vintage bangle—used as a source—rather than her vast collection of CHANEL jewelry. Seriously, thank you. I can’t thank them enough. Haha.
This bangle is actually something we’ve been treasuring in our own personal collection. We didn't want to let it go, but it’s just so incredible that we had to share it. I recommend it to all of humanity.
The silver is very soft and can be bent quite freely. Please wear it wherever you like, whether on your upper arm or over your clothes.
