A quietly beautiful silver choker made in China around the 1930s.

It is believed that the original was created as a piece of silver jewelry in the late Qing Dynasty, around the 1900s, and because it bears an English hallmark, we surmise it was produced as export jewelry in China or the surrounding region around the 1930s.

I encountered it in France and acquired it simply thinking it was a cool-looking, unique choker. As I researched it, I was thrilled to discover it was from the Qing Dynasty—the very dynasty I had seen in history textbooks. I had associated silver crafting in Asia with Southeast Asia, so learning that China had been producing silver ornaments since ancient times opened a new door for me; it is truly a profound world. It made me reflect on how jewelry is an incredible, deep-rooted part of human culture, crafted from local materials in every era and every country since the dawn of time to adorn the human body!

Digressions aside, this choker lacks the typical flashiness associated with China, and indeed lacks any traditional "antique" feel at all; at first glance, it is pared down to the point of simplicity, but upon closer inspection, it is complex and delicate.

It features a hollow tubular silver structure with mesh-like detailing wrapped around both ends.

This design, composed of incredibly fine silver wire, is truly unique and demonstrates a level of intricate craftsmanship I have never seen before.

The screw mechanism is so precise that it’s hard to believe it’s a century old; it fastens securely without any slack. It opens with a torque-style movement, making it a great unisex piece.

The feeling of overwhelming antiquity hidden in the details of a piece that is not just modern, but minimalist to the point of looking futuristic, is truly irresistible.

The aesthetic of integrating the clasp into the design so that it is seamless is common in the French vintage silver and high jewelry we often handle, but the fact that this idea was conceived and executed at the turn of the last century is, in my opinion, nothing short of genius.

I estimate the silver to be high purity, likely around 950.

I believe I will likely never be able to acquire an item like this again, so I’ve shared my passion for it, believing this to be the last time.
