A French work jacket from Le Mont Saint Michel, circa 1950s. Black moleskin. This was deadstock that has been washed once.
It’s a classic, staple piece that looks great; putting it on again after a long time reminded me of that.
The shape is simply excellent. The material, too...
It’s marked size 44, and based on how it fits me, it’s a men’s M-L.
That said, it has a compact fit.

Vintage French workwear is truly cool.
Regarding the moleskin material, it was used in French workwear from the 1800s to the 1950s and is said to have been worn by coal miners.
Because of its functionality and durability, fine cotton threads were woven at a high density, which gives it both its toughness and this beautiful silk-like luster.
Apparently, the black version was worn by those in higher positions.
It’s easy to understand why the higher-ups would have a different jacket color, right? (laughs)
Black moleskin like this has become truly hard to find. I often think about how we’ll probably see even less of it in the future.
To be honest, even in France, it’s become impossible to source due to current trends and soaring prices. (laughs)
I’ve said a lot, but after buying and wearing this, I just think it’s a genuinely cool piece of clothing.
The shape is beautiful, and the size is easy to wear.
It’s a piece I look forward to wearing in and seeing fade over time.
