Early 20th century North India Himachal Pradesh silver bracelet

A powerful piece of jewelry created in the early 1900s.

I acquired this from a German dealer who told me it was made in the state of Himachal Pradesh in Northern India.

The craftsmanship is so intense it transcends "amazing" and reaches a level that can only be called chaotic; I’ve kept it in my private collection for a long time, but as I’m organizing my stock, I’ve decided to share this special favorite of mine.

This bracelet is composed of rounded pieces, each finished with intricate hand-carved designs

and assembled link by link, almost like a hinge.

It bears a striking resemblance to certain modern designs, like the silver balls from Chrome Hearts, but

it’s truly incredible to think that this was already being crafted in India roughly 120 years ago.

The clover-like motif is likely inspired by the sacred Pipal tree leaf.

Indian jewelry draws its design roots from nature, such as plants and flowers;

many of you may have seen the famous bangles featuring two animal heads facing each other, and

that love and respect for flora and fauna have traditionally breathed life into their jewelry designs.

While drawing inspiration from nature is common in Nordic and Western jewelry as well, it is fascinating how that expression differs entirely from region to region.

In the early 20th century, India was a British colony, a period with a dark backdrop of exploitation of technology and trade, but

the skill of the Indian silversmiths of that time (known as Sunar) deserves to be brought into the spotlight.

Unlike the bib-style pieces like the Rajasthani necklace I introduced previously, or pieces made of many delicate, multi-layered parts, this bracelet goes beyond simple ethnic aesthetics and has a distinctly modern mood,

making it exceptionally rare even among Indian silver jewelry.

And setting aside the explanatory preamble, at the end of the day, it is simply incredibly cool.

More than anything, that is what matters most. It is a bracelet that truly lifts your spirits when you wear it.

It’s not just about the historical background or being as old as possible; I believe this is the kind of bracelet that looks stunning now and will still look incredibly cool to everyone 100 years from now.

The beautiful variations unique to individual hand-crafted parts are a highlight; to wear it, you overlap the ends like a hinge and insert a screw-like pin to secure it.

A safety chain is attached to the screw, and the construction is robust and secure, requiring a firm pull to insert or remove.
