This is my first time encountering one of these.
An antique priest's vestment adorned with lace.
It is a robe that was actually worn by a French priest in a church.
Usually, when we think of lace, we think of ornate blouses or dresses, but
this piece radiates a uniquely sacred atmosphere.
If you look closely at the lace on the hem, it forms a cross motif,
a simple yet sophisticated and beautiful piece of handmade lace.
Often, these garments have lace or embroidery on the sleeves,
but this one has no other ornamentation, and I fell in love with that simplicity.
(Honestly, I liked it so much I hesitated to put it up for sale. Haha)
It is difficult to pinpoint the exact era, but church smocks like this seem to have been widely produced from around 1900 to the 1940s.
The neck is gathered with plenty of pleats,
and it features the intricate handiwork typical of old French garments, with gussets at the shoulders.
The resulting volume and the way it naturally holds air create a wonderful, airy silhouette.
The material is not linen, but a soft and light cotton,
with that distinctive crispness unique to vintage French cotton.
Since it was originally made to be worn over clothes by a male priest,
I think it is quite rare to find one with this length that can be worn like a smock.
The collar is meant to be tied at the front, but I wear it with the tie in the back.
Although it is quite open, perhaps due to the abundance of pleats,
it doesn't feel too revealing and has a healthy, balanced look.
It’s a wonderful garment that is antique yet offers so many ways to style it.
If it doesn't sell, I want to keep it for myself. I love it.
