An old French black chambray work coat.
A permanent masterpiece of French vintage, often referred to as "black chambray,"
though I personally prefer the name "atelier coat."
They have become truly hard to come by lately; even when I go to France, they are nearly impossible to source from local dealers, but
I managed to find just one in a rare, larger size that can be worn by men.
As the name suggests, atelier coats are famously known for being worn by artists and art students as overcoats while painting, but
they were also worn by farmers and horse dealers (it's said that hair and grass didn't stick to them easily), and there were even versions for children, making them a widely circulated type of work coat in France.
Because of such uses, each coat has its own character—some with paint splatters, others with numerous repairs from repeated mending—which is part of the charm of an atelier coat.
This piece has a unique and perfect "worn" condition, from the texture of the fabric and the repair marks to the slightly faded colors of the pockets.
There are no noticeable stains or fatal damages. Please take your time to look through the photos.
I personally have used and loved atelier coats for a long time, and I truly believe the fabric of this garment is exceptional.
Over time, it has reached a shirt-like weight, yet it remains sturdy while being thin and breathable—the perfect weight for a light outer layer in early spring.
The rich, evocative atmosphere that only French black chambray possesses, which cannot be described by any other material, never fades; I absolutely love it.
Though these are fine details, the sleeves are short and wide, featuring the three-dimensional, tubular construction unique to French garments, and the pockets are set near the hip bone, creating a voluminous, wide silhouette when you put your hands in them—it’s truly stylish, so please see the photos of it being worn.
