A vintage, native-style costume from Studio Babelsberg in Germany.
Located on the outskirts of Berlin, this studio has been producing films since 1912;
it is actually the oldest large-scale film studio in the world.
Of course, it is still fully operational today, and it seems that recent films like Wes Anderson's Isle of Dogs were shot here.
Beyond the studio's long history, this costume likely has a rich history of its own. Given the fringe and beadwork on the jacket, which have a Native American or cowboy aesthetic, I wonder if it was worn by cast members in Westerns. It’s quite a mystery, especially since Western imagery is so unexpected for Germany, particularly in the East. I won’t dig too deep into the details since they remain unclear, but that adds to its unique character.
I am not certain about the exact era, but based on the beads on the collar and sleeves, the embroidered trim, and the aging of the lining, it is definitely older than the 70s.
The lining features a stamp that looks like a military specification, leading me to believe that wartime military fabric might have been repurposed. The fabric itself also has an overwhelming military feel.
The only identifier I could confirm was the UFA stamp from the film studio, so I cannot be certain, but there is no doubt that it is made from very old fabric.
I have gone on for a long time, but there is one thing I want to convey above all else: it is surprisingly comfortable to wear, contrary to how it looks.
To be honest, many handmade vintage costumes have great fabric and design but are rather poorly constructed,
whereas this one has a solid pattern, and the way the sleeves are set forward is perfectly calculated. The hidden button placket on the front also functions without any issues.
Due to the rigors of filming, there are some missing fringes and loose beads, embroidery, and decorations, but for those who love this style, these are just signs of character.
There is absolutely no damage to the fabric or the body of the garment itself. Because it is so comfortable to wear, it is wonderful to be able to treat it as a standard jacket without any hesitation.
Western-style clothing with beads and fringe is usually made of heavy suede, so I think it is rare and great to be able to wear it in this light cotton material.
A vintage piece perfect for the end of a long winter. I truly think that people who can enjoy clothing like this are wonderful.
