Antique Rajasthani silver collar

Antique Indian silver jewelry.

Likely from Rajasthan in Northern India, dating from before the 1920s.

Rajasthan is exceptionally famous even within India, a country renowned for its jewelry,

and it seems it was a city that prospered through jewelry production and tourism.

They have a wonderful culture where both men and women enjoy wearing jewelry on a daily basis.

From that very Rajasthan comes this substantial necklace that encircles the neck. It's tough. It emits a somewhat extraordinary aura.

This main chain uses a very old-school technique that has been employed in Britain and elsewhere since the Victorian era.

The drop-shaped beads seem to hold various meanings such as fertility, and were apparently gifted or worn during weddings.

Please also take note of the intricate rope carving on the part connecting to the clasp.

This is not a smooth piece like a snake chain, but rather a rigid, fixed design.

Thinking that each of these fine braids was carved by hand makes me want to pull my hair out.

It was originally quite oxidized and nearly black, but I polished it while maintaining its character. The balance of the grooves and shadows is three-dimensional and fits beautifully around the neck.

While we aren't very familiar with it, Indian jewelry culture and manufacturing techniques are truly magnificent.

When you hear "Indian jewelry," you might imagine an ethnic style, or perhaps gaudy, flashy pieces adorned with bright stones...

But among them, we have been able to source pieces that are accessible and easy to incorporate into daily life for the first time.

I've written a lot, but basically, it's just really cool!
