It’s actually made of eel skin—a material not very familiar in Japan, and the first time I’d heard of it too—but apparently, it’s highly prized as a luxury material in Europe.
Its unique feature is a stitch-like pattern running down the center of the narrow hide, and it’s known for excellent color vibrancy that allows for subtle shades.
I certainly thought it had a sophisticated look I hadn't seen in other leathers, but I never imagined it was eel! lol
It’s also known for being over 1.5 times stronger than cowhide; it’s thin yet soft, with a glossy feel, and is even used for small items like wallets by high-end brands like Burberry.
I love that it’s lighter and easier to carry than genuine leather, yet still durable.
Since it comes from an aquatic creature, it seems to be somewhat water-resistant, too. What an amazing material!
